"We are entering the new year with confidence"

Burkhard Eling, CEO of DACHSER, looks back on the year 2023, which was characterized by overcapacity, rising inflation and volatile conditions for the industry - in short: the special boom in logistics has come to an end. Nevertheless, there is good reason to start 2024 full of confidence and thirst for action.

“We can look back on a year in which global supply chains have largely eased and normalized again. At the same time, however, the combination of overcapacity and high inflation caused new upheavals, particularly in air and sea freight. It is clear that the special boom in logistics came to an end in 2023.

Relaxation and normalization – as logisticians and global citizens, we operate in volatile structures and conditions to which these two terms do not apply. Geopolitical upheavals and long-term structural trends will continue to result in high and rising costs, for example for energy, personnel and transport partners. In addition, we must continue to invest significantly in digitalization and automation as well as climate protection measures in order to be able to offer our services with convincing quality in the future.

Fruits of the strategic orientation

Like the entire industry, the transformation presents us with a Herculean task. Nevertheless, we have good reason to enter the new year with confidence. Because we are following a clear plan – our 2030 vision. We know where we want to go – for our customers – and have already reaped the first fruits of our strategic orientation: The digital transformation at DACHSER is progressing rapidly. Our climate protection measures are moving the entire company forward. We have significantly expanded our own network with acquisitions in the Netherlands, Australia, South Africa and Italy. Above all, however, we are gradually expanding our range of global end-to-end transport solutions for groupage. The pilot projects to interlink operational processes in air and sea freight with European land transportation are successful. The tangible benefits are already convincing a number of global customers. With these successful projects, we are taking a lot of momentum into the new year.”

National strike in France – update week 4

During the past weeks, massive strikes against a planned pension reform have paralyzed public transport in France. The strike is still going on this week (week 4).

French ports, which are already impacted by days of strike, are getting congested. Alternative options like Antwerp, Genoa or Barcelona are getting congested as well, therefore delays on bookings and pick up/delivery with those ports are expected.

Here is an overview of the planned strike activity in the French ports:

  • Dunkerque: dockers/stevedores 23/01 & 24/01; tugboats 22/01 to 25/01 until 6 am
  • Le Havre: dockers/stevedores 22/01 to 25/01 until 6 am; tugboats 24/01 to 25/01 until 8 am
  • Montoir: dockers/stevedores 22/01 to 25/01 until 6 am; tugboats 21/01 to 24/01 until 9 am
  • FOS: dockers/stevedores 22/01 to 25/01 until 6 am; tugboats 20/01 to 23/01 until 9 am

Pick-up and delivery by rail would be also difficult. Air freight is not concerned so far, but we will keep you informed about that.

Latest update on DACHSER Air & Sea Logistics operations

With this update DACHSER would like to inform about the current DACHSER Air & Sea Logistics operations across the regions APAC, EMEA and Americas. In the attached document (see download below) it is listed whether a country organization of DACHSER is operational or, if only limited or not at all, why this is the case. Since the situation in the countries may change rapidly, the attached document will be updated on a regular basis and published on our website.

We sincerely regret any inconveniences caused to our customers due to the pandemic. At DACHSER, we have contingency measures in place and will offer our customers the best alternative solutions to keep the supply chain running. Anyhow, the situation at ports, airports or customs authorities might cause delays. Furthermore, the capacity situation on the global airfreight market is very tense as there are basically no passenger flights operating at the moment.

At the same time, DACHSER has installed strict hygiene measures (e.g. home office) to ensure a safe working environment and to do our part in stopping the spread of the virus. DACHSER is trying to keep the impact of these measures as low as possible, however, together with the official measures by the governments, the precautions may lead to some delays in the operations.

DACHSER appoints Jesper Larsen to lead South East Asia

Larsen has assumed the role of Managing Director Air & Sea Logistics South East Asia effective April 1, 2022. Based in Bangkok, he is responsible for 220 employees in eight locations across Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. He reports to Roman Mueller, Deputy Director Air & Sea Logistics Asia Pacific.
